THE OTHER SIDE OF DEMOCRACY
Democracy, the government of the majority has come under flak from many critics over the years, pundits of the field who made out time to re-examine the essential qualities and to gauge the degree of rationale behind a government formed with the consent of the majority.
Among these critics is a pioneer modern dramatist- Henrik Ibsen. Like many others, Ibsen sees democracy as the government of majority rule. His differing view however questions the depth of intelligence in the perspective the majority upholds. To this end, expressing his resolve through Dr. Stockings, his mouthpiece in his famous quintessential modern play- An Enemy of the People (1882), Ibsen’s final submission is encapsulated in my subsequent paraphrasings.
While the majority rules in democracy- a system of government now fancied by every modern nation that aspires to gain global reckoning, the suspicion of such critical enquiry wherefore highlights on the correctness of the views held by the larger percentage of the population.
A large number of humans have shallow reasoning and are so undecided in views that, whatever shows up from others becomes their shared opinion. Majority of humans are like this. They have no room for individual stance or analytical dissection. What this implies accordingly is that, a popular opinion sanctioned by the majority is a product of a bunch of dimwits whose faculty is without intellectual sagacity.
Categorizing people in the society into two groups using intelligence as parameter, Ibsen outlines thus;
- the intellectually bankrupt constituted by a large number of the people who, to add it up, are highly vulnerable to weak sophistry and susceptible to other forms of cheesy manipulations.
- The second group is made up of a handful of people, whose opinions are results of astute cerebral engagement yet, have their views scorned, surprisingly considered anti-populist and often, are treated with repudiation by the light-headed majority.
This group consists of those most qualified to man the helm of affairs of the state but, their way of accession to the peak of power is hampered by the principles of the government of the majority which is the fulcrum of democracy.
This in view, one is left to question the efficacy of the decisions taken by the majority whose number is populated by the basest dunces. Have you ever wondered why right-thinking, well-meaning giants like Wole Soyinka, Pat Utomi and the likes cannot be president of Nigeria? You might also like to question what then is the essence of the modern democracy, the government of the so called majority. Who makes up the majority anyways? This is the meanest challenge of democracy; the government of the majority constituted by the most gullible!
The question now should be- how effective can this process go and what is the best way besides appointment to exiguous portfolios can be deployed to engage technocrats meaningfully to bring about sweeping change in the fortune of the nation? You may decide to reason this out with me and my ilks who care.
